Broomball Rules

The rules for broomball are not that dissimilar to that other rink sport, hockey. The following are just a sample of some of the rules.

Off-Side

The main difference between hockey and broomball is the "off-side" rule. The ball must cross the red line before the player, or the play will be considered off-side.

Checking

Broomball is full body contact with the exception of our co-ed league. As well, our junior program involves limited checking.

Positional Play

Players on the ice consist of three forwards, two defense and one goalie. Face-offs occur in the circles on the ice, similar to hockey.

Duration of the Game

The game is split into two periods of "stop time" of 15 minutes each.

Overtime

Overtime is sudden-death; first goal wins.

The Rink and Nets

Broomball is played on a normal ice hockey rink. The goals are bigger than in ice hockey with them being approximately 60 inches high by 80 inches wide.
